Clifford E. Fried has been practicing reals estate and business law for over 25 years with a reputation for effective, high quality legal representation.
Named one of the top real estate attorneys in Northern California by Law & Politics and San Francisco Magazines, Clifford E. Fried has established himself as a leader in the field of leasing, landlord-tenant law and rent control. He also has an AV rating, the highest rating given by Martindale-Hubbell, the foremost national attorney rating service.
He earned his law degree from the University of San Francisco in 1984 and received a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1980. Prior to forming Fried & Williams LLP, he was a partner at Wiegel & Fried, LLP in San Francisco.
Clifford's practice focuses on representing clients in trial and appellate courts, at mediations and arbitrations, and in hearings before various administrative agencies such as rent boards, planning and labor commissions. He represents both small-time property owners and large owners such as insurance companies and national REITs.
In his career, Clifford has handled real estate fraud cases, construction defect claims, foreclosures, partition actions, disability access cases, easement and other border disputes, transaction disputes, tenancy in common and partnership disputes, nuisance cases, defended City abatement actions (code violations, blight, nuisance), and defended tenant lawsuits for breach of the warranty of habitability, mold, lead, wrongful eviction, and other claims. He has prosecuted several constitutional attacks against the City & County of San Francisco based upon improper rent control laws.
From 1999 to 2004 Clifford taught real property law at Oakland College of Law. He regularly presents legal updates to the Bar Associations of Alameda and San Francisco Counties and continues to lecture Realtors and property owners throughout the State of California. He has published hundreds of articles on landlording for several California publications and he writes a regular column called Court Talk that appears in several apartment industry publications.
Clifford is a member of, and actively participates in, the Oakland Association of Realtors, California Apartment Association, San Francisco Apartment Association (recipient of the 2007 President's Award for his contribution to the apartment industry), Rental Housing Association of Northern Alameda County and the Professional Property Managers of San Francisco.
Besides the above participation and accomplishments, Clifford is a long-time volunteer for the East Bay College Fund, a community-based non-profit organization that provides substantial scholarships, mentoring, on-going college counseling and life skills training to East Bay (primarily Oakland) public high school students from low income families and communities with historically low college attendance rates.
